I was excited to start mining again after ditching GPU mining. Once the price dropped to 0.06 per, I ordered a set of 10. Plugged in 5 to two different computers (both modern systems with quality motherboards and high output USB ports with individual fuses). Right off the bat, one of them wouldn't mine. The light would turn green as soon as mining was attempted. Later that night, another went down. It just stopped after a while. Edit: Only 2 went down, not 3, but I will have to test them more to make sure Is this common? Is there a way I can troubleshoot this? I am not doing anything crazy with my miners, just plugging them into various USB ports, and mining. They aren't crowded or anything that would cause problems as far as I can tell.
Has anyone tried using bitmining hardware? What was your experience with it?
So I've been looking into mining bitcoins, and I understand that everyone now thinks it is a bad idea since you won't really make a profit. My question is, what about bitmining hardware like this where you can get max 600 GH/s? Is that total BS?
I got my hands on 3 Block Erupters, a Logilink UA0124 powerid USB hub and wanted to mine on my Raspberry Pi 3. I followed this guide without problems, until I get to the ls /dev/USB part. When connected to the Pi it seems like only one of the ports works. If I plug a miner into that port, it shows up: /dev/ttyUSB0 It doesn't matter which of the three miners it is, they all enumerate in that port. If I have all three miners plugged, they all have a green light shining, and nothing shows up on the Pi. If I then unplug the USB hub from the Pi and plugs it into my main computer running Ubuntu, all three miners show up there. So all three miners works on my main computer but doesn't enumerate on my Pi. What am i missing? The hub is of course powered by and external powersupply, 3.5A. Final update: I had an old very cheap USB hub which surprisingly works. All three miners are now plugging away happily at just shy of one Gigahash. I can't wait for the riches to start accumulating ;) Update: dmesg output: That did show something:

It's a 7-port hub with three of the ports occupied by the block erupters.
I'm not talking about this starter kit; rather, I'm talking about laying the groundwork for some light Bitcoin mining using a RPi Model B. Block erupters aside, I wanted to buy a Pi and some other things for around $30 that has:
A USB hub for the erupters
A USB fan for cooling said eruptors
Class 10 SD card for holding mining software
I don't know a whole lot about RPi or BTC, but I think that this list is a good one. Short post shorter, I need your help on deciding what to buy. When the stuff comes in doesn't really matter. Just tell me what I could add, change, or remove from the list to make it better for mining. Thanks!
Hello! At the moment, I don't use my Raspberry Pi for something usefull. A friend of my recommended that I could start mining Bitcoin. I have never done it before (Just some days on my computer. Manged to mine 0,00x something Bitcoin), and I wanted to try it out after reading this. I know that I am not able to generate that much Bitcoin, but I just want to start. As I said, I don't use it to anything else. Why not mining for Bitcoin? I have never done it before on Linux. My idea was to buy a USB Hub, a fan, and a lot of these. So, how would this actually work with the Raspberry? I am afraid that it's using a bit to much power than the Raspberry can handle. Fortunately, the USB Hub is powered. Can I buy two of these hubs, and then connect 9 miners on each? Is this actually possible? Do you have any great tutorials on how I can easily set up a miner on Raspberry Pi? Thank you very much!

I think that this seems to be a pretty obvious question, the answer to which is to build a dedi machine. However, I don't want to pull the trigger without a little bit of feedback first. I have an 8 core CPU, along with a 2GB GPU. Right now, this puts out a stable 247 Mhps, which admittedly is not that great, but whatever. Here are the 2 options: I could upgrade my computer (I am already considering putting in a 4GB GPU), and then maybe later get a few block erupters and plug them into my computer. My computer is not on all the time, so that could be an issue. There are some other things I could do, and I won't really go into details right now, but here is what I came to while writing this: I am probably going to upgrade my GPU to a 4GB one anyways, so it makes more sense to do that (save my old 2GB one), and then buy a block erupter or 2. As time goes on (read:this summer), I will probably buy more block erupters. As I go on, I will put together a very small and basic computer that will be dedicated to bitcoin mining, with some kind of CPU (suggestions?), and my old 2GB GPU, which at that point will most likely be a lot cheaper, so I can buy another if I want, and then just get a large USB hub, and plug that in, and then just start adding block erupters on to it. Thoughts? Suggestions? Sweet pics of cheese? Thanks for reading! P.S. Happy Thanksgiving to those in the US!
How to determine a break even point and how many coins one can mine?
If I had a Block Erupter 49 Port USB Hub and started filling it with AntMiner U2 2 gh/s USB miners, how do I figure out how many coins I can mine versus the expense of the hardware? (lets forget about electricity for now) The Hub is $99 and the AntMiner U2 2gh/s are about $23 each. I looked at this: https://alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator so plugging in 98 gh/s (49 miners * 2gh/s each) it would seem that this makes $16/mo but this hardware would cost about $1200 + a power supply to power it all. Where is the sweet spot for hardware cost versus return? is the above setup worth the money or for the same amount is there a better solution?
Alright, so let's say I have a $450 budget for getting into mining. Would it be a better idea to buy a bunch of ASICs/ powered USB hubs and only mine sha-256 coins, or to build a new computer and be able to mine both scrypt and sha-256 coins? I'm currently at uni so profitability and power use isn't a huge deal for me, it's more of a hobby I'd like to get into. Also, with the current ASICs on the market (like the Block Erupters) will I even be able to mine other sha-256 coins besides Bitcoin? Or are they Bitcoin-specific? Thanks guys!
I FINALLY got back into bitcoin with some block erupters. I may not be making $$$, but it feels good to be back in the game. I'm mining away on cgminer 3.4.2 with the eruptors connected to a 7 port Rosewill USB hub. Everything appears to be functioning properly. I'm getting around 1% in HW errors. Is that too much? Should I get a better hub? About hubs, I'm planning on buying more block erupters as their prices decrease. What are the best hubs for the money for this situation? I've done some research, and it appears that the 10 port version of the hub I'm currently using has an adequate power supply to run 8 of them. Should it suffice? Or should I go with one of the several $50+ hubs I've seen people recommend for this purpose? Any info would be great. Is the 2 weeks over yet? My first Jally order is March 19th.
I have looked over google for some help but im obviously not looking in the correct places because I did not see what i need. Hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction. Here is whats going on. I started off with 1 asic block erupter (ASICMiner Block Erupter USB 330MH/s Sapphire Miner) and everything was going fine. i added another one to the setup and everything was still going fine. (this is all being done on USB ports that are on the back of my PC, no USB hub, yet) I then aquired an antminer (BITMAIN ANTMINER U2 2Gh/s USB Bitcoin ASIC Miner. Overclockable) and plugged it into my PC as well. I am using BFGminer 3.10.0 currently and everything was running fine. all 3 miners were mining. I went ahead and ordered a usb hub because i figured if i was going to keep adding miners that my computer would not be a good place to put them all. well a day before the hub got here, i noticed that one of the miners (the saphire one) was not mining. i looked at my device manager and only saw 2 of them. so i rebooted, messed around with some different ports but nothing made that one work. i figured it was broken for whatever reason and assumed it was because it wasnt suppose to be on my mother board. thing is, it works on another PC. so i waited for the hub to come in to see if it would work on there but it still does not. Im thinking its a driver issue since its not showing up on this computer but it will on another. Any idea or suggestion on how to get my current PC (windows 8.0) to run it? Should i try a different version of bfgminer, or maybe cgminer? im fairly new to all this so i dont really know where to go with it.

If malicious hackers can pool together tons of phones together to reach considerable hashing power; Can a positive community crowdsource a large batch of cheap USB miners with auto-p2pool configurations? A significant amount of small parts add up to a greater sum!
We now hold the discussion about the danger of GHash's strength, let's use this energy to make a difference. Let's use frictionless money to make it easy for a bunch of small contributions to make a big difference. Ghash is popular because it's easy to mine at any amount and get a small payout, even if it doesn't quite break even. P2Pools offer the same advantage because there is no middleman to collect fees. Yet until P2Pools get larger hashing power, this makes it not advantageous for small miners to individually direct towards P2Pools.. Yet if a bunch of small miners directed towards a single pool, it can make a significant difference Developers have already created bot-net type applications that use phones to pool together and mine. It has occured on iOS, Android and has been occurring since 2011. So if developers can do this maliciously, could we use this same mentality in a beneficial way to easily and cheaply secure the network? Currently you can get small USB miners for a few bucks. And if you want to spend a little bit more, it's easy to get a hub/dock to group more then a few miners together. Yet even just running one device in the background while online would be useful if many people did this. So what can we do? Well the best way to coordinate an effort would be to crowd-fund a kickstarter like campaign to buy a bulk amount of USB miners so that people could spend a few bucks and get a miner or two to give to friends. It would be great to get a large vendor trying to rid stock could do something like this perhaps? Ideally I would like to use Lighthouse yet it is not ready. I am unaware of any other decentralized crowd-sourcing applications. If nothing else arrises then Bitcoin Starter could be a substitute for such a fund. How many people would be interested in running a small USB miner in the background while your on your computer? If everyone pitched in a buck or two to get a small miner shipped to their house, would you run it? Please give your thoughts! If you can help please stand up and if your willing to support make that known! If you think this is stupid then say so! tl;dr: let's see if we can get a community crowdsourced effort to distribute small usb miners to a crowd of people. If they all pointed their dust-amount of hashing power it could add up to a greater sum. If done with a P2Pool it could be a very beneficial action to secure bitcoin's decentralization.
Dr Jally or: How I learned to stop worrying and love the ASIC.
I was a late comer to the bitcoin love, I started mining last summer, nothing major, have never had more than 600Mh/s to my name really... but on a whim I ordered a Jalapeno in late august, and then I tried to put it out of my mind as everyone else fought over if BFL would ever ship or not, etc.... I just figured that worst case, the money was gone really... lo and behold, it arrived about 3 weeks ago, let me briefly share a few things, as some of my tinkering and experiments may benefit others:
I got the non-heatpipe heatsink version, standard edition (5gh I think is the marketed speed?)... did not pay for the upgrade to 7...
Unboxed and plugged in, I averaged out around 5.4gh and temps in the low 40s (41-43).. the thing sounded like a jet engine. No, seriously, I would have 3 systems going, and that little box was the loudest thing in the room.
At those rates, I ran the numbers, and determined my ROI period was 18 days. (My total out of pocket was $163, pre price hike). My plan was to mine back what I needed in BTC to pay for the device, plus a little extra (1.8 BTC was my total target).. then I started hearing about things one could do to push it a little further (remove from case, better fan, firmware upgrade to push faster, etc)... so I spent about $100 in parts (jtag programer, cable, torx bit, etc) and decided once my 1.8BTC was mined, it was open season on the hardware, warranty be damned... purely for science you understand.
Meanwhile I started accumulating orders for a couple Block Erupter USBs for ~1BTC each, because hashrate is a dangerous drug. I also tossed in a Raspberry Pi, case, some other odds and ends (powered usb hub, etc), with the intent to power down my watt guzzling GPU rig entirely, instead of it sitting there running just to feed the ASICs..
This past weekend I opened the little black box of mystery and had some fun:
Tore down, removed the heatsink. They used thermal pads that are not adhesive on the heatsink side, so I was able to remove HS without tearing the pads any. That said, repeated removal and putting it back, I think you run the risk of them tearing over time (I have a couple small tears in mine when I took it off the first time)..
I added some copper heatsinks (think Raspberry Pi heatsinks...) to the mosfest and a few other areas of the board that (to me) seemed to run hot.
Replaced the stock fan (I'd heard the horror stories of fans breaking) with a low profile Noctua (92mm fan for anyone who is pondering), and flipped the fan over to blow down into the heatsink.
I flashed the firmware to the stock 1.25 firmware that's floating around.. They say you need to watch that the chips don't overheat while you have it powered up to flash as you can't put the heatsink and the flash cable on at the same time.. I'll admit, I constructed a leaning tower of cooling (remember those little bronze heatsinks I mentioned? two of them right on top of the ASICS, OEM heatsink propped on top to hold them down) while I jtagg'd the microcontroller, and I was still very worried about heat (cable up everything except power, mouse over the "Erase!" button in jtag software, power up BFL, smash Erase... chips go idle... load the firmware image, push "Load", as soon as the LED started showing activity (chips powered!) I ripped the power back out.
I did all this in one sitting... maybe an hour total, most of that checking it out the inside and pondering what I was about to do.
I plugged everything back in, powered up my host... and noticed my jally was just flashing like crazy and my host couldn't see it. uh-oh. I powered it off, back on, and it was fine. Since then I've powered it off about 10-20 times, and twice it would go into "super fast flash like crazy but not work" mode. Simply unplugging and replugging would solve it. I have not dug into this at all, but I think it's failing to init or pass the boot up tests. There's word around town that you can tweak the firmware to push speed further or reduce the strictness of the tests it does, but I'm happy with what I've got, so I'm leaving it: Right now Other than to change coins or work on my host system (now that it's a raspberry pi I don't think I'll be changing it much more), it's been running non-stop at around that rate/temp since the weekend. Right now my little rPi host is bashing away, with the jally and three block erupters (I know they'll most likely never reach ROI for themselves by themselves, I just wanted to tinker, but still may add a couple more to break 10Gh total just for bonus points), the jally firmware "upgrade" everyone talks about is really designed for one of the other models (the bigger ones), and that's why I think it reports as "BFL 0h" or "BFL 0d" I assume "d" and "h" are the two ASIC spots on the jally board that actually have chips on them in the jally... I figure all in I'm looking at around... lets say $650 and 90 watts (max) total for ~8.29Gh/s... The erupters really distort my numbers right now, (without them it'd be more like $350 and 80 watts (max) for ~7.3Gh/s)... but again, hashrate is addictive. The jally power supply has always seemed to run hot to me, even before I pushed the update firmware, so I may try and find a biggebetter quality PS for it, and more erupters will sadly mean I need a new usb hub, as my current one is only rated for 5v 2A, and it has to be close to that with 3 erupters, the pi, and the usb fan. :/ So I guess I've still got more investment to go, but it's just a hobby, I can quit anytime, right? right? tl;dr edition (or what I learned, without the story):
Yes, the jally is loud, remove the case, flip the fan. Your temp will drop and (with a new quiet fan atleast, I can't vouch for the oem fan), it's much quieter. Use the "top" of the case as the new "bottom", and leave the sides and top off.
Yes, ASICs can mine alt-coins provided they are sha256 and don't change too much. I've done TRC, PPC, and FRC with the BFL/Erupter setup... I found one SHA256 recently that choked with rejects, I can't remember the name, but it was one of the recent new SHA256 based coins.
Yes, there's a firmware out there you can flash the Jally with to open it up from 5gh to the 7gh -> 8gh range. The 7gh model has (I believe), just a version of this newer firmware, no better chips necessarily , so if you buy the 7gh upgrade, you are probably not going to push it to 10g or something crazy with the firmware.. note that doing this does void your warranty as far as BFL is concerned.
Hashrate is addictive, no matter how much you have, you'll still want more.
I've been running my Gridseed on a RasPi ever since I found out that I can't control a GS and some Bitcoin block erupters on the same device. The Block Erupters are crunching away on their own dedicated device now. The issue now is that I'm noticing that every few days (3-5), the RPi will completely lock up and become unresponsive. A powercycle will fix the RPI and I don't have to touch the Gridseed but I am at a loss as why the RPi stops responding. The RPi is even less helpful when it comes to syslogs as there's nothing in the logs indicating a kernel panic or anything else that would explain the device's shutdown. I've thought of everything in trying to get this stable. I've swapped SD cards, reloaded the OS (Raspbian with no X), recompiled cgminer, and even swapped out the USB power supply for a high quality USB PSU. It's identical to the Pi using the Block Erupters except cgminer versus bfgminer, even down to the same SD card model and series. I've got a Fury coming soon and have an RPi waiting for it as well, but if the RPi can't handle a Gridseed, I'm concerned about the Fury's performance. (I'm not the only one running a Fury from a Pi, so I have to be overlooking something) I am at a total loss here. Any suggestions? Thank you. Edited to add: Well it's been a week now and unfortunately the issue has gotten worse. I even went so far as to swap out the RasPi in case it was a Pi issue and still the issue persists. Does anyone know if the Gridseed uses the +5VUSB for anything more than powering the serial UART bridge in the miner? I'm thinking it may be a undercurrent issue that's causing stability issues for the Pi as the Gridseed never needs to be reset when the Pi locks up. Another Ninja Edit: I was successfully able to get the Gridseed up for longer than a few hours by adding a self-powered USB Hub. The miner has levelled out now and is completely stable. If you encounter issues with your miners and you're using a RasPi, add a good self-powered USB Hub in between the USB port on your Pi and your miners.
Alright, I'm new to all this Bitcoin mining stuff. I have a raspberry pi, and I'm looking at these ASICMiner USB Block Erupters and i'm kind of clueless on if it's even worth buying. I would buy 3 of the miners, put them on a USB port hub, and then cool it down with a fan. Is it worth the investment? I'm not looking to spend huge amounts on these 20 Ghash/s miners.. Thanks.
I am new to Bitcoin Mining and thus wanted to know if my idea for a rig would work. Using a raspberry pi with an 8gb SD card running minepeon. Connected to this would be an Bitmain Antminer U1 USB Block Erupter running at 1.6gh/s. This would be on a powered USB hub. This way i could hook up more erupters or ASICs in the future. Start up cost would run just shy of $200. Please comment if this would work or any other things i should know. Many thanks.
Alright so I just got my first asic USB block erupter I know difficulty is up and I'll be lucky to make 30 cents a day but I'm excited. I am wanting to slowly get more of these USB sticks and then add a powered USB hub and fan get something around 1gh within next few months. I love the whole idea of bitcoin and the culture of it. Any advice while I'm starting fresh ?
